About USO Alaska
The USO is a 501c3 nonprofit military support organization. The mission of the USO is to connect service members with family, home and country throughout their service to our nation.
The USO’s support throughout Alaska is traced back to WWII, with temporary USO Clubs in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Ketchikan, Seward, Juneau, Sitka and Skagway (1941-1947). There are now more than 200 USO locations worldwide, offering a broad, ongoing scope of support for those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
Since late 2015, USO Alaska has supported the mission of the USO by offering a variety of programs and outreach initiatives to ease the challenges of service for Alaska’s military. In February 2016, during the USO’s 75th anniversary year, the first-ever USO Wellness Center and USO Alaska Center opened at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) near Anchorage. The centers are open to all active duty service members, members of the National Guard, Reserve and their dependents.
During 2016, the USO Alaska Center and USO Wellness Center at JBER welcomed nearly 15,000 guests. USO Alaska’s programs and services touched another 37,000, for a total first year impact of 52,000 of Alaska’s military community. Staff and volunteers delivered hundreds of new toys to military families across the holidays and provided food and beverages at homecomings and deployments, supported numerous wellness activities, facilitated baby showers, and events to help strengthen the resiliency of military families coping with the unique challenges of military life.
Expansion to Interior Alaska is in progress, with a permanent USO presence at Eielson AFB and Fort Wainwright by spring 2017. It is also updating the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Anchorage to enhance the enlistment experience for service members new to the military.
Volunteers are always needed! We welcome active duty, spouses, retirees, vets and civilians. Anyone interested may complete the volunteer interest form at https://volunteers.uso.org. A USO Center Operations Supervisor will contact you with more information.
